Event Recap: Owls Nest Farm Sweet Potato Gleaning
On the only sunny day of late September, a group of volunteers from Slow Food DC traveled to Owl's Nest Farm to support this small farm in harvesting sweet potatoes for its fall CSA and also gleaning leftover potatoes. The initiative, designed to combat food loss and support this Slow Food DC's Snail of Approval winner, brought together community members eager to lend a hand. Under the guidance of the farm's owner, volunteers spent the morning digging in the earth, pulling up the vibrant tubers that would otherwise remain unharvested. With smiles and camaraderie, the group transformed the farm's fields into a bustling hub of activity, fostering a sense of connection to the land and each other. SFDC volunteers were given a tour of the farm and were shown firsthand how Owl's Nest Farm ensures fresh, nutritious produce is sustainably grown.
By midday, the volunteers had collected roughly 150 pounds of fresh sweet potatoes, which will be donated to our friends at ReDelicious DC and distributed to the community the very next day. SFDC volunteers made a big impact in just a few hours. Not only did the event help our farm partner and reduce food loss, but it also ensured that nutritious food reaches those who need it most. The event highlighted the importance of sustainable practices and the value of community involvement, leaving participants with a sense of fulfillment and a deeper appreciation for local agriculture.
